VIEWPOINTS
NOTE: The views expressed below are my own. However, they embody the guidance
I would provide to constituents researching these issues. As promised, my voting in Congress will be bound to the expressed majority view of my fellow South Dakotans and I will fervently advocate their collective wisdom.
ENERGY INDEPENDENCE:
This is an area that, at its heart, is a national security question. It is unconscionable for our government to place the nation in a position where unfriendly foreign powers could strangle the American economy. Furthermore, I wish to never again hear my country accused (justifiably or not) of going to war for oil. Let us explore every alternative and rely on solid science in this pursuit. I believe the United States can achieve energy independence, using only the natural resources within its borders and our home-grown technological expertise.
Despite the current tragedy with the Deepwater Horizon rig, I believe that these resources can be safely employed while remaining faithful to the vision of great American conservationists like John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt and the unknown Native American who made this prayer:
" Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind, make my hands respect the things
you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Let me learn the lessons
you have hidden in every leaf and rock."
