VIEWPOINTS
IMMIGRATION: My wife, Vicky, was born in the Philippines and became a naturalized U.S. Citizen. I believe rational immigration strengthens the nation, though the immigration and naturalization processes could certainly be streamlined.
Illegal immigration is another matter.
(1) Secure borders are one of the prime responsibilities of the federal government.
Our federal government is not doing its duty. This is a national security issue
above all else.
(2) A government cannot expect its citizens to obey the law, when non-citizens are
rewarded for breaking the law -- not for long. No one (even our friends in
Arizona) feels more anger over illegal immigration that those new American
citizens who respected our laws and did it right. The rule of law is critical to a
stable society.
(3) As Americans, we take pride in our diversity and we are naturally compassionate
toward those less fortunate. Illegal immigration, unchecked, will inevitably
erode these virtues and that would be the far greater loss.
NOTE: The views expressed below are my own. However, they embody the guidance
I would provide to constituents researching these issues. As promised, my voting in Congress will be bound to the expressed majority view of my fellow South Dakotans and I will fervently advocate their collective wisdom.
